Comfy Conversations – Quotes on Friendship

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

“Friendship is the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person having neither to weigh thoughts or measure words.”  ~ George Eliot

“A friend laughs at your jokes when they’re not so good, and sympathizes with your problems when they’re not so bad.”  ~ Arnold H. Glasgow

“One can never speak enough of the virtues, the dangers, the power of shared laughter.” ~ Francoise Sagan

“The most I can do for my friend is simply to be his friend. I have no wealth to bestow on him. If he knows that I am happy in loving him, he will want no other reward. Is not friendship divine in this?” ~ Henry David Thoreau

“Penny Stones are a HIT!”

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Below is a message I recently received from a school counselor.

Tammy,

This year at the All Ohio Counselor’s Conference, I purchased a bag of Penny Stones. I was excited to buy them because they were something different to use in my school counseling setting. I bought the pink slumber party bag. I have 3 self esteem/friendship groups that I am currently conducting (3rd, 4th, and 5th grade). At the beginning of each group, the students pick one Penny Stone out of the pile and they have to share their answer with the group. The kids LOVE them! They always ask, “Miss Creek, can we please pick another one?”. I just wanted to let you know what a HIT these Penny Stones are with my students.

Thank you very much!

Sincerely,

Candice C., M.Ed

Games for Educators Review of Penny Stones

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Games for Educators newsletter reviewed Penny Stones today.  Here’s an excerpt:

It was delightful for all of us to get to know one another better. One student remarked,

I have known my friend since kindergarten, but I never knew that she. . .

We loved getting to know others and at the same time telling about ourselves.  It was fun for us to discuss topics that maybe we would have not imagined without the aid of the category, such as naming a superpower one would like to possess.  We agreed that Penny Stones is fun and is a great tool to use at the beginning of the school year or for any icebreaker activities.

Importance of Communicating Well at Home

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

“Good communication skills and techniques are mostly the result of learned behavior. The examples we are given as children at home, at school and with our friends has a great deal to do with how we develop in this area. Generally, and in simplest terms, the better those around us communicate as we are growing up, the better the skills we develop. Because we have very little control over that when we’re young, we are not all on equal footing starting out. Luckily, it’s never too late to make improvements (nor is it too late to forward this blog to your parents, who might benefit from it as well!).” – from Stephanie Silverman’s Blog, click here to see the whole article.

Chatty Cathy and Chatty Charlie?

Monday, August 31st, 2009

I love it when my husband listens as I “use up my 10,000 words” some nights.  We’ve both heard, from various sources, that women say 10,000 words a day while men use less than half of that.  So I was surprised to find the following study on Wikipedia:

A study completed in July 2007 by Matthias Mehl of the University of Arizona shows that contrary to popular belief, there is little difference in the number of words used by men and women in conversation. The study showed that on average each of the sexes uses about 16,000 words per day.  - Are Women Really More Talkative Than Men? Mehl et al., Science 6 July 2007

So does that mean that I’ll have to listen as he uses up his 16,000 words some nights now?

Communication = Connection

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

It’s important to stay connected but it’s difficult with our hectic schedules.  Some mothers have asked me about texting.  If that’s how your child is comfortable communicating, then go with it.  And let them know you’re always available to talk.  Here’s some common texting shortcuts:
